Housing affordability continues to be a struggle for both owners and renters nationwide, according to Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies recently released “State of the Nation’s Housing” report. The 2018 report finds that home prices continue to rise in most metros. In addition, many areas are seeing a shortage of subsidized rental housing combined with ongoing losses of low-cost rentals, making affordable rental units increasingly scarce. Federal housing assistance to low-income families also continues to fall short of demand; as a result, most lower-income households pay more than half their income for housing each month.
